iLevel Meeting Notes for March 19, 2004

ILevel Meeting Notes, March 19, 2004

Members present: Elaine Bell, Tony Drommi, Dina Dubuis, Tom Jeffrey, George Libbey, Marcel O’Gorman, Mark Ottenbreit, Sarah Swart, Emmy Yousey.

Basic Skills/Computer Proficiency Exam

Emmy met with Wendy Norfleet to discuss the exam. Emmy presented the exam to the committee. There are three sections. If students pass they place out of CIS 100 and may take CIS 102. If Students complete all 5, they can then take CIS 103.

EXAM BREAKDOWN: There are two sections.
1) Windows interface, Word, Excel. If you pass, eligible for CIS 102.
2) powerpoint, access. If you pass, eligible for CIS 103.
No e-mail or FTP. Students, instead, will be given a packet with their UDM e-mail and FTP account. This is for incoming freshmen only. Faculty can request these packets for their courses as well, to cover students who don’t have accounts.

This will be a placement exam as well as a measuring tool.

Wendy will insure that each exam is staffed during SOAR. The lab assistants will help implement the exam. Wendy, Emmy and STM upper-classmen will score the exams.

Emmy suggested that the STMs will work with Wendy Norfleet, who will set up a site for tutoring and mentoring. Ideally, Wendy will work with UAS to make the STMs part of their unit.

The exam has been approved by the CIS curriculum committee. It must now be approved by the Core Maintenance Committee. Marcel and Wendy will take it to the Core Maintenance Committee.

Question: Can students take CIS 100 if they pass the exam?

Sarah: What about distance ed programs that include full-time freshmen? How can we accommodate them?

We need to consider ways of putting the exam online, and not just for distance ed purposes but to streamline the SOAR exam implementation.

Next meeting: Tuesday, April 27.
